How to Keep a Real Christmas Tree Fresh in a Texas Home

A real tree can look good for six weeks or six days. The difference is almost entirely the first hour and the first three days. Here's what we tell every customer on the lot.

1. The fresh cut is non-negotiable

When a tree is cut, after several hours the trunk takes up water more slowly; a fresh half-inch cut reopens the water-conducting tissue. A trunk that can't draw water is a tree that's drying out from the moment you get it home.

Every tree that leaves our lots gets a fresh half-inch cut off the base. If you're not putting it in water within about 6 to 8 hours of that cut, make another one at home. A hand saw is fine. You only need to remove a thin disc.

2. Water. Then water again.

A tree can drink up to about a quart of water per day for every inch of trunk diameter — check the stand daily and never let the water drop below the cut. If it does, uptake slows again and you're back to step one with a saw.

• Check the water every morning for the first week, then every couple of days.
• Plain tap water. No sugar, no aspirin, no bleach, no commercial additives. None of it beats plain water in controlled tests, and some of it hurts.
• Fill the stand before you decorate. You won't want to crawl under a lit tree later.

3. Placement matters more in Texas

Most tree care advice is written for places where December is cold. Austin in December can be 75°F with the AC running, and that's the problem. Dry indoor air pulls moisture out of needles faster than the trunk can replace it.

• Keep the tree away from heating vents, fireplaces, and sunny windows.
• If you run the heat, a humidifier in the room helps the tree and your sinuses.
• LED lights run cool. Old incandescent strings dry out the branches they sit on.

4. Pick the right species for a long run

If you put your tree up Thanksgiving weekend and want it looking good on New Year's Day, species matters.

5. Enjoy it

Do the fresh cut, keep the water up, and keep it away from heat, and a Noble or Nordmann from our lot will carry you from Thanksgiving through New Year. If you took delivery from us, text us in January to schedule pickup — removals run January 2–6.
